Montenegro and North Macedonia have decided not to participate in the 2023 competition
The Montenegro and North Macedonia will not be competing in the 2023 Eurovision Song Contest in Liverpool due to the cost of participating.
Broadcasters pay a fee to take part in the competition, but the amount varies according to the size of the country, the BBC points out. Some countries were asked to pay more for their own participation after Russia was kicked out of the competition.
It is recalled that Russia, which had a large financial contribution, was expelled from this year’s competition after its invasion of Ukraine.
“In addition to the significant cost of registration fees, as well as the cost of staying in Great Britain – we also faced a lack of interest from sponsors, so we decided to give the existing resources to the funding of current and planned national projects,” Montenegrin public broadcaster RTCG reported .
The total cost of participation for all the broadcasters involved is normally around £5m, but the exact amount paid by each participant is not made public.
It is also understood that some other countries have considered withdrawal as a result of the additional costs.
