Bakoyannis: No negligence on the part of the Municipality of Athens in the case of Kolonos

by

Responding to the accusations of oligarchy on the part of the municipality in the Kolonos case, the mayor of Athens, Kostas Bakoyannis, pointed out that “some colleagues fell into the trap of washing away the perennial responsibilities of the central state, limiting the discussion to self-government and targeting the municipality of Athens “.

The tragic case of Colonos was the main point of reference and discussion between the municipal authority and the opposition, during tonight’s meeting of the municipal council of Athens.

On the opposition side, the head of the “Open City” faction, Nasos Iliopoulos, noted that the data show that poverty is increasing in the neighborhoods of Athens and therefore there should be a discussion about “what we are doing as a municipality on the issues of poverty and what is our strategy – because what happened in Colonos is a huge ‘bell ring’ for what happens to families who are vulnerable, what happens when social services and control mechanisms operate deficiently, because this specific case had a depth time”, and estimated that the revelations require a redesign of the municipality’s direction.

Referring to the data that Mrs. Gagakis and Mrs. Daskalakis brought to the attention of the municipal council earlier, regarding the state of the municipality’s social services, Mr. Bakoyannis pointed out: “I think that all of us, beyond and above factions, have a common goal – to protect the next victim. And in this direction is the municipality of Athens at the moment. We were asked about social workers, the answer is that we have asked for 9 and unfortunately we have been approved. The answer is that we have 11 positions open in the context of mobility , unfortunately no one responded. The answer is that fortunately through the Covid contractors we managed to secure an additional 22 social workers for the municipality and this is very important,” Mr. Bakoyiannis underlined, to note that “the municipality of Athens systematically and persistently patches the holes left by the central state”.

Both the municipal authority and the opposition expressed their sadness for the death of the Olympic medalist Alexandros Nikolaidis, and in the introduction-proposal of Nasos Iliopoulos that the municipality of Athens financially support organizations such as the “Flame” Association, Mr. Bakoyiannis said that the municipality of Athens already has a very close cooperation with “Floga”.

“Last Friday, a very important project began – it is the paving of the road that connects the two hostels. As this wonderful president of the Flame, Mrs. Mary, said, this means that the children of the Flame will finally see some sky. So it goes without saying that whatever we can do above, we want to do it and do it together,” underlined Mr. Bakoyannis.
