The old-mature valley of Nestos, in which the river has been “boxed” and opened a new deeper and steeper valley, was the most suitable solution for the construction of the dam
In the mountains of Drama, where nature has the ability to offer the visitor the most authentic images of a strongly virgin character, human intervention, perhaps for one of the few times, has managed to coexist harmoniously with it and impress with the effect it has produced.
Starting from Paranesti and heading northwest, following the opposite course of the river Nestos, in one of the most convenient road accesses, the visitor will encounter two unique dams, where each of them holds a first.
The first of the two, the so-called “Platanovrysi Dam” is the first dam made of rolled concrete for the preparation of which the fly ash of the thermal power plants of Ptolemaida was used as the basic material, thus achieving great economic benefits for PPC and significant environmental benefits for the natural landscape of the area, while this pioneering construction, artificial lake created a quantity of water of the order of 90,000,000 cubic meters.
About 7.5 kilometers in a straight line (12 road kilometers) northwest, the second dam, that of Treasure, steals the show with its own first, being the largest rock-cut dam in the Balkans as well as one of the highest geodams in Europe. It is a 175m tall earthen dam with an impermeable clay core, which began operation in 1997.
