Here’s Which Celebs Threatened To Leave Twitter After Buying Elon Musk

by

After Elon Musk, 51, bought Twitter in a $44 billion acquisition, some celebrities left the social network in protest. The tycoon completed the acquisition of the platform last Thursday (27).

Screenwriter Shonda Rhimes, 52, left the platform saying she wouldn’t “stand around waiting for anything Elon [Musk] have planned. Bye.” Actress Mia Farrow, 77, had previously threatened to leave the platform in April over fears the site would become more “toxic” and “hateful”.

“Keep Twitter worthy of your past achievements and nice people everywhere,” she wrote, in a message to the billionaire. “She Hulk” actress Jameela Jamil, 36, had also threatened to leave the platform in April. At the time, she said she feared the purchase would cause Twitter to reach its “ultimate form of utterly lawless hate, bigotry and misogyny.”

Writer Shaun King, 43, had temporarily deleted his Twitter account, also in April, saying the billionaire’s purchase was about “white power”. “The man was raised in Apartheid by a white nationalist. He is upset that Twitter will not allow white nationalists to target/harass people.”

Since returning to Twitter, King has retweeted several articles criticizing Musk and his purchase of the platform. “This is Us” producer Ken Olin, 68, also threatened to leave the platform. “The day Elon Musk takes ownership of Twitter, I’m out.”

Josh Gad, 41, set to voice Olaf from “Frozen,” also commented on the situation. “Big exodus happening on this platform. Not sure if I stay or not. Leaning towards staying, but if today is a sign of things to come, I’m not sure what the point is. Freedom of speech is great. Hate speech intended to incite harm, (without consequences) is not what I signed up for.”

Musk made an offer for the site for the first time in April, however, he only acquired the platform in October. The Tesla CEO has previously asked his “worst critics” to stay on Twitter in the name of free speech.
