Concert Hall: The great celebration of jazz is coming – Beginning with Ennio Morricone

On Saturday, Stefano di Battista, dear friend and collaborator of Ennio Morricone, comes to life with his quartet of timeless compositions by the great film composer.

A great celebration with musicians from the entire spectrum of jazz that gathers the cream of the Greek and international scene is coming to Athens Concert Hall. This is a new artistic initiative of the organization with nine concerts that will take place from November 5 to 13 in the Banquet and Dimitris Mitropoulos Halls as well as in the Stage B of the Alexandra Trianti Hall.

In particular, on Saturday 5/11, Stefano di Battista, dear friend and collaborator of Ennio Morricone, brings to life with his quartet the timeless compositions of the leading film composer. On Sunday 6/11, musicians who accompanied Thanos Mikroutsikos in special moments of his artistic career will perform his compositions in the style of jazz and blues, as well as songs in the poetry of Eleftheriou, Cavafy, Kavvadia, Brecht and Tripoliti. On Monday 7/11 jazz meets artificial intelligence and Simon the robot. The research of Dimitris Vassilakis is called jazz mapping, it concerns the mapping of the language of jazz and aims to highlight its narrative character, offering artificial intelligence the necessary tools to understand the process of machine learning. The research is being carried out at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (EKPA) and the National Natural Sciences Research Center “Demokritos”, in collaboration with the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech), where the Simon robot is being developed. The concert-presentation at Megaro includes compositions specially written for the Simon robot by Gil Weinberg, its creator, and Dimitris Vasilakis. The lineup includes saxophone, trumpet, piano, bass, drums, guitar and laptop. As a member of the jazz ensemble, robot Simon accompanies and improvises on marimba and voice. In fact, on the occasion of the concert, a round table is organized on Tuesday 8/11 (15:00-17:00) in Substage B with free entry, as well as educational activities (6-8/11) for teenagers 12+ and adults in the framework of the “Shimon Robot and Friends” project, with the support of the US Embassy in Athens.

Next on Tuesday 8/11, the award-winning Norwegian Espen Berg Trio, one of the most important jazz trios of our time, with a program rich in bold melodic shifts and imaginative polyrhythms. On Wednesday 9/11, the pianist Sakis Papadimitriou, who despite his 82 years, remains a brave and creative musician, brings on stage a unique mixture of experience and freshness, nostalgia and momentum, serving the essence of jazz.

An evening of inspired works where the aesthetics of classical music meets the improvisational vibrancy of jazz comes from Pappas and Friends on Thursday 11/10. With unexpected musical dialogues between Chick Corea and Mozart, Jacques Lussier and Bach, George Gershwin and Queen.

On Friday 11/11 we will see on the stage of the Dimitris Mitropoulos Hall, the renowned Cypriot pianist and composer Stavros Lantsias (together with Andreas Polyzogopoulos, Michalis Kalkanis, Michalis Kapilidis), and on Saturday 12/11 the Quartet of Alexandros Drakos Ktistakis, where in his Megaro program, he combines original compositions and songs from the albums “Tora” and “Kykloi” with new unreleased material. The Quartet collaborates with the performer Katerina Polemi, and together they explore the relationship of jazz with the Greek tradition, pop, rock, and classical music.

Finally, on Sunday 13/11 the Quartet of Dimitris Kalantzis, after their extremely successful readings of the work of Theodorakis and Hadzidakis, prepared a tribute to Michel Legrand, inspired by the music of the French composer, one of the greatest “cinematic” composers of the 20th century. In the educational program “It’s all jazz to me”, the journalist Prokopis Doukas talks to the pianist Dimitris Kalantzis in the context of “Jazz@Megaron” (9/11).
