Hair Loss Tips – Three Experts Explain

by

If you see more and more of your hair falling out, it makes sense to worry. You can change your care products or add new ones to your routine. But is hair loss really a cause for concern or is it normal depending on the season? And what are the best ways to deal with it?

We consulted the dermatologist-venereologist Dr. Valia Mousatou, the nutritionist Dr. Thekla Gioni and hair expert Dimitra Danika to understand the causes and how we can prevent and treat hair loss.

The advice of a dermatologist

Hair quality depends on genetic factors, our age and external factors. Also their normal loss is 50-80 hairs per day, with most leaving after shampooing. Falling hairs are replaced by others, as each hair has a lifespan of 2-7 years.

It is common to notice more hair loss per period. This, however, usually balances over time and is associated with stressful periods of life. In addition to stress, hair loss can be due to seasonality, thyroid dysfunction, iron deficiency, childbirth and discontinuation of contraceptives, taking certain medications, an exhausting weight loss diet and heredity.

It is good to deal with it in collaboration with a specialist. After the necessary tests are done, the specialist will suggest the appropriate treatment. In most cases, if the hair loss is not due to organic causes, it is treated in three ways.

Initially, the use of special topical preparations that regenerate the hair and extend its life while reducing micro-inflammation around the hair follicle is particularly beneficial. Dietary supplements containing cysteine, zinc and B-complex vitamins may also be given. Finally, treatment is completed with specific targeted care products.

It is worth noting that dyes, hairdressing and styling products do not affect hair loss, but the quality of hair that can be damaged by excessive use. Respectively, the use of a helmet and frequent bathing do not cause dilution.

The advice of a nutritionist

Nutrition is directly related to hair health. A good diet rich in vitamins, minerals and trace elements helps reduce hair loss and strengthen hair. In contrast, an inadequate diet can wear down and thin the hair, making the problem worse.

Some of the most common nutrients that have been linked to hair loss are:

  • Protein
  • Iron
  • Zinc
  • Selenium
  • Ω-3 and Ω-6 fatty acids
  • Niacin
  • Biotin

But before you start looking for the right supplements, it is important to know that the biggest secret of a good diet is variety. If there is variety in the food you consume, the possibility of missing one of the above is reduced.

Also, although the use of a biotin supplement has been shown to be effective in treating hair loss, it should be noted that supplements are not a panacea. Everything, including the health of your hair, starts with a good and balanced diet.

The tips of the hair expert

Starting with prevention, using a scalp exfoliator twice a month will enhance the effective transfer of nutrients to the hair follicles. This is crucial for healthy hair. Also, the use of specialized products in collaboration with a specialist will strengthen and grow the hair.

Going into the treatment of hair loss, the goal is to penetrate the active substances and protect the hair roots. Thus, products that promote microcirculation in the area of the hair follicles for better absorption of nutrients are necessary.
