The exhibition and the Center for the Protection and Promotion of History and Art of the Holy Metropolis of Ioannina will remain open Monday-Wednesday-Friday-Saturday from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm.
The opening of the exhibition of images that were stolen and repatriated, entitled “From the seizure to the return”, at the Center for the Protection and Promotion of History and Art of the Metropolis of Ioannina, was opened today at 11 am by the Minister of Culture Lina Mendoni.
The exhibition, which is co-organized by the Metropolis and the Ephorate of Antiquities of Ioannina, presents, together with a wealth of observational material, 24 heirloom icons and 2 pairs of pediments, which were previously stolen by circuits of shrines and antiquities, from churches and monasteries of the Metropolis of Ioannina and were found in foreign galleries.
The minister, during her speech, said that the illegal trafficking of cultural monuments is part of a criminal network with international action, and emphasized that “no one is spared in the fight against antiquities, in the fight for repatriation”.
The event was also honored with their presence, the regional governor of Epirus, Alexandros Kahrimanis, the mayor of Ioannina, Moses Elisaf, while after the greeting of the metropolitan of Ioannina, Maximos, followed the speeches of Vasiliki Papageorgiou, head of the Directorate of Documentation and Protection of Cultural Properties of the Ministry of Culture and Varvaras Papadopoulou, head of the Ephorate of Antiquities of Ioannina.
Also present were the MPs of Ioannina, St. Kalogiannis and M. Kefala, deputy regional governors, deputy mayors, representatives of the Security Forces and a crowd of people.
After the greetings and speeches, which highlighted the problem of antiquities and the ways to deal with it, there was a tour of the exhibition spaces, but also of the permanent collection spaces.
