“Transgressions 2022-23”: Four Shakespearean comedies in the SNFCC Theatrical Repertory

by

This year’s Transgressions will rely on an expanded ensemble of new actors, rotating through the repertoire

The Transgressions, his Theatrical Anthology Cultural Center Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNFCC), return for the sixth consecutive year to Faros with the general title “Love Matches” and the artistic direction of Hectors Lygizos. Four of William Shakespeare’s most characteristic and entertaining comedies (Love’s Struggle, Twelfth Night, The Comedy of Misunderstandings, The Stringer’s Day) on the themes of love, delusion and gender identity, are undertaken to be staged by four directors of the younger generation (Manos Vavadakis, Eva Vlassopoulou, Katerina Yiannopoulou, Aris Balis) – persons who, while distinguished for their personal method and outlook, are united by their love for texts and fruitful experimentation with stage discourse.

This year’s Transgressions will be based on an expanded ensemble of young actors who will rotate within the repertoire, while the translations are signed by important poets and translators (Katerina Angelaki-Rook, Dionysis Kapsalis, Stratis Paschalis, Nikos Hatzopoulos). . The Violations are taking place again this year thanks to the donation of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF).

On Sunday, November 13 the series opens with two performances (at 14.00 and 17.00) of the work to which it owes its title. Aris Balis directs the emblematic love struggle barren, translated by Stratis Paschalis and adapted by Hector Lygizou. As noted by Hector Lygizos “the world of Shakespeare’s comedy is a world full of outrageous plots, battle of the sexes, battle of reason with emotion, endless misunderstandings, crazy love, heroes and heroines who are anxiously searching for their identity and their other half, intelligent puns, epic arguments, irony of fate and the poet himself, happy outcomes, but also a lot of darkness”. This world will be introduced to us by the actors Vangelis Ambatzis, Konstantinos Zografos, Katerina Patsiani, Ioanna Piata, Jason Stasinos and Areti Tili.

Aris Balis was born in Patras and graduated from the Drama School of the National Theater in 2012. He has participated as an actor in performances by Hectors Lygizos, Dimitris Karantzas, Akyllas Karazisi, Yiannis Houvardas, Giorgos Koutlis, Dimitris Tarlow, Alexandrou Euclid, Blitz, Konstantin Bogomolov , Ludovic Lagarde, Efis Theodorou, Lillys Melemé, Natasas Triantafyllis, Argyros Chiotis, Giorgos Skevas, Dimitris Xanthopoulos, Dimitris Agartzidis and others in works of the Greek and international repertoire and in events and theaters such as the Athens and Epidaurus Festivals, Arts and Letters Center, National Theater , New Stage Theater – Lefteris Vogiatzis, New World Theater, Porta Theater, Poria Theater, National Opera, Festival d’Avignon and others. In 2018, together with Panagiotis Exarcheas and Cornelios Selamsis, they jointly created the show Systemeno, which was presented at the Alternative Stage of the National Opera and later at the House of Angelos and Letos Katakouzinou, and in 2019 he directed the show Neolithic Night at Kronstandi by Nikos Karouzos at Bios .
