The famous singer will not take part in the 2022 opening ceremony and will only perform in Qatar if there is progress on human rights

Dua Lipa denied reports that he will appear at the opening ceremony of the World Cup in Qatar. The 27-year-old chart-topping singer, born in London to parents from Kosovo, said she would only play in the country if there was progress on human rights.

Recently, many articles have been written about the treatment of migrant workers in Qatar and the criminalization of same-sex relationships.

The treatment of the LGBTQ+ community in Qatar has raised concerns among supporters, who hope to travel to the country to see their team in action.

Following reports linking her to the event, the singer wrote on Instagram: “At the moment there is a lot of speculation that I will be performing at the opening ceremony of the World Cup in Qatar. I will not appear and have never been involved in any negotiation to appear.

I will be applauding England from afar and I look forward to visiting Qatar when they have fulfilled all the human rights commitments they made when they won the right to host the World Cup.”

BTS star Jung Kook will take part in the opening ceremony, which will be held at Al Bayt Stadium on November 20. American rapper Diplo, DJ Calvin Harris and Jamaican singer Sean Paul will also perform at the Fifa Fan festival.

Lipa is not the only artist to avoid performing in Qatar. On Sunday, Sir Rod Stewart revealed he turned down $1m last year to play in the country.
