‘Orphans’ by Gal Costa continue singing in a procession to the dunes after the 7th day mass

Before Gal Costa’s seventh-day mass began, this Tuesday (15), Giulia Gam walked straight through the door of the church of Nossa Senhora da Paz, in Ipanema (south zone of Rio), and went under the light rain to the bakery opposite.

She bought a box of candles, checked her reflection in the mirror, and followed. There was still more than an hour to go before the start of the celebration, which started to the sound of the chords of “Força Estranha” and the prelude of Bach’s first suite.

The mix of MPB and classical music was played by the cellist of the Brazilian Symphony Orchestra Janaína Salles.

It was Maria Bethânia who hired her to pay homage to her friend at the church, and, before introducing herself, Salles said that it would not be an easy job. “My biggest challenge is going to be not crying,” she admitted.

Sophie Charlotte, interpreter of the singer in the film “Meu Nome É Gal”, by Dandara Ferreira and Lô Politi (scheduled for release in March), was also very emotional. “I’ve idolized her my whole life,” she said. The actress said that she exchanged ideas with Gal many times during filming, “and she was always very affectionate”.

Even Father Jorjão, with 30 years of ordination and a curriculum full of masses and baptisms of celebrities (Tom Jobim, Marília Pera, Renato Russo and Paulo Gustavo, to name a few), said that this would be special.

“I was very influenced by her song, the one from ‘It’s necessary to be attentive and strong’ [“Divino Maravilhoso”] is one of the most important to me,” said Jorjão, himself a pop star in Rio and the neighborhood of Ipanema.

The mass ended the same way it started: with a song linked to Gal’s universe. “Alguém Cantando”, from the album “Bicho”, from 1977, had tissues taken out of the bag and drew tears and a long round of applause from those present.

then the big finale: Bachianas nº 5, by Villa Lobos, on the cello. Another kind offer from Bethânia, who was not present personally, but from her heart.

In the end, a parade organized on social networks by Luana Carvalho, daughter of Beth Carvalho, left with part of those present singing songs by the singer. “The idea is to go walking and singing to the dunes”, said Luana, referring to the place that Gal frequented and that Mayor Eduardo Paes (PSD) promised to baptize as Dunas de Gal.

The route is about 600 meters. Some people who were in the bars along the way joined the tribute.
