The actor’s comment garnered positive reactions. One user replied: “He’s English, he can support England. In fact, he can support anyone he wants. However, this title is reprehensible: it implies national subjugation, it must be stopped. He is “Prince of Wales” because his father gave him the title. It means literally nothing else, get it over with.”

Another wrote: “William is English and should be proud to support England. There is no problem or bitterness with it. He doesn’t need to support Wales out of obligation.”

The two teams meet in the group stage on Tuesday, November 29.

Another Twitter user wrote: “I have to say I agree. I’m a fan of his, but he can’t close his ears in his new role. If he is Prince of Wales he cannot support an opponent in the world competition. Its a shame”.
