The defeat of the bosses –Marília Mendonça and the duo Maiara and Maraisa– at the Latin Grammy for the duo Chitãozinho and Xororó in the Best Sertaneja Music Album category yielded memes and criticism on social networks. Fans accused the award show of machismo for giving the award for the second year in a row to the duo.
A fan tweeted that it’s unfair that the three singers didn’t win the Grammy because their album was a milestone in the sertanejo. “Everyone who likes this style of music knows how to sing the songs. Not to detract from Chitãozinho and Xororó, but I don’t think they have the same influence on the medium today.”
“It’s not discrediting Chitãozinho and Xororó, but their album was not as successful as Patroas’, they deserved to have won”, wrote an internet user in the caption of a photo of the three singers in a concert. “History is already made,” he added. Another netizen shared a meme on a television with the announcement of the sertanejos’ victory and a person shouting in the background: “What a robbery of disgrace, boy”.
Maraisa herself made fun of the defeat by posting a video on Twitter asking in English where the trophy room was, fueling the internet users’ revolt. “Because I’m going there to steal [o troféu], Chitãozinho and Xororó are not here, nor will you see. Where is it?”, Maraisa said in the video shared on Twitter.
A user of the social network commented on the singer’s post with a montage of a movie poster with her face and changing the original name of the feature “The Girl Who Stole Books” to “The Girl Who Stole Grammy”. “Maraisa Vida, you’re not going to steal if the prize is already yours, you’re just going to get what they took from you for theft”, wrote an internet user.
“Marília Mendonça, Maiara and Maraisa just won the Grammy, that’s not me saying, it’s the almost 20 million monthly listeners they accumulate on Spotify!!”, commented an internet user.
