“There was a test with Leo and everyone was fascinated … I said let’s read the script and ‘let’s see how your chemistry with Kate is going to be,'” James Cameron recounted.

The movie “Titanic” was a big bet for him James Cameron, who was looking for his suitable protagonists. He had considered Gwyneth Paltrow for the role of Rose until he met her Kate Winslet, which he called “fantastic” in an interview with GQ. THE Leonardo di Caprio was in his first choices, however, their collaboration, which established DiCaprio as a star, almost… sank, as it was difficult…

“There was a test with Leo and everyone was fascinated … I said let’s read the script and ‘let’s see how your chemistry with Kate is going to be,'” James Cameron recounted.

When DiCaprio refused, Cameron shook his hand saying, “Well, thanks for coming.” According to the director, a shocked DiCaprio replied, “Wait, wait, if I don’t read, I don’t get the part… Just like that?”

Cameron gave an ultimatum to DiCaprio that Titanic was a “huge production that will take two years of my life. So I’m not going to spoil it by making a wrong casting decision. So either you read or you don’t get the role.”

According to the director, it was with a heavy heart that DiCaprio agreed to read his words, but behind each of his words was a lot of negativity.

“He thought his role had no psychological or physical trauma, no depth… Until I got upset and told him these are props, now I want action, he understood the challenge, and suddenly, transformed into Jack” Cameron concluded.
