The competition was fierce; more than 200 showed off their facial hair in four categories: moustache, partial beard (the scruffy 1990s beard synonymous with Johnny Depp’s look), beard and artificial. Sommer Hibbler presented a steampunk-inspired creation using coils, springs and chains and won first place in the latter category.
However, a world record was also broken this year: during the event, participants stood next to each other and clipped their beards together, resulting in a beard chain 45.72 meters long. The previous record – 19.05 meters – was set in Germany in 2007.
