Strange World: Disney’s First Film With a Gay Protagonist – Totally ‘Sunk’ at the Box Office

by

The film was expected to bring in $30 million to $40 million, but has so far underperformed

Disney’s ‘Strange World’ (“Strange World”) failed at the box office over the Thanksgiving weekend.

With $11.9 million from 4,174 North American theaters over the weekend and $18.6 million for the five-day holiday weekend, the animated film drastically fell short of projections for its North American release.

The film was expected to bring in $30 million to $40 million from Wednesday through Sunday, and even those numbers wouldn’t be particularly impressive.

“Strange World’s” opening numbers now rank as one of Disney’s worst opening weekends in recent memory, behind other family films like “Encanto” ($27.2 million on the traditional weekend and $40 million during of the extended Thanksgiving holiday season) and “Lightyear” ($51 million) and just barely ahead of “West Side Story” ($10.5 million), which was released during the pandemic.

Sources predict that ‘Strange World’ will lose at least $100 million during its film rununless his course improves drastically in the coming weeks.

“Strange World” received mostly favorable reviews, but box office results after its November 23 release are not looking good.

While the story follows the Clades, a family of explorers who travel to many planets, it introduces a new sci-fi-adventure concept. Strange World is a lighthearted animated film with a sweet message about family at its core, but it’s not too different from what Disney often offers. A gay teenage girl, a mixed-race couple and a dog with only three legs are included in the animated film.
