John Leguizamo: Fights for Hollywood’s Discrimination Against Latin American Actors – Spodes for Al Pacino

Actor in 2022 criticized James Franco’s choices in a movie about Fidel Castro

John Leguizamo shared his thoughts on Al Pacino, who plays a Puerto Rican in the movie ‘Carlito’s Way’.

The 1993 film, directed by Brian De Palma, follows an ex-con trying to live a crime-free life after being released from prison and also starred Leguizamo.

“You know, it was a thing of the time — before that he played a Cuban,” Leguizamo said, referring to Pacino’s earlier role in De Palma’s “Scarface.”

“Yeah, he was trying to do a Cuban/Mexican accent,” the actor said, adding: “I know he tried and he’s a great actor, so brilliant – he was my hero – but it was weird, man.”

Leguizamo elaborated, “It’s a strange experience to be Latino in a Latino story written by a Latino and the protagonist is a white guy pretending to be from Puerto Rico. I’m not going to lie, it’s surreal. It was surreal.”

The role of gangster Benny Blanco in “Carlito’s Way” was Leguizamo’s film debut. However, he said he “turned the offer down a few times” before “finally” deciding to do it. “It’s just that Hollywood has always been weird,” he said.

The actor has long campaigned against Hollywood’s discrimination against Latin American actors, and in 2022 criticized James Franco’s casting in a film about Fidel Castro.
