Britain’s ruling Conservative Party MP Bob Seeley has said he plans to introduce an amendment to the House of Commons bill that would make it easier to strip Prince Harry and Meghan Markle of their Duke and Duchess of Sussex titles.
The occasion was the first part of the Sussexes’ documentary about their experience as a couple in Britain and in the royal family, which was shown for the first time on Thursday by Netflix.
In the first three episodes, among other things, the couple discussed the “unconscious prejudices” of members of the royal family and the racism that Meghan Markle, as a woman of mixed race, experienced in the country.
There were also critical comments about the Commonwealth, which tabloid newspapers in Britain criticized as an affront to Queen Elizabeth’s legacy.
Although he made it clear that he intended to table the amendment even before the documentary, Mr Seeley said:
“This is a political issue. As well as blasting his family and cashing in on his grief for popular consumption, (Harry) is also attacking some important institutions in this country.”.
Legislation introduced by individual MPs in the House of Commons rarely gets through. In fact, a representative of Downing Street said that the government would not support such a legislative initiative.
But Mr Seeley’s move, which he dates to January, is indicative of the negative reception the documentary has received in Britain by politicians, the media and much of the world.
The amendment would allow the king’s privy council to further downgrade the role of the Sussexes.
Also, the Deputy Minister for Employment, Guy Opperman, during his appearance on a BBC television program, urged citizens to boycott Netflix, saying that he himself will definitely not watch the controversial series.
