JK Rowling, the author of the Harry Potter saga, presented, this Monday (12), an organization created by her to help women victims of sexual violence. Called Beira’s Place, the organization proposes “a support service for women, managed by women”.

The service offers free help in the Scottish capital, Edinburgh – where the writer lives – to any woman over 16 who has suffered sexual violence. Beira’s Place is financed by the author herself, who suffered gender violence.

In recent years, JK Rowling has become a staunch advocate for women’s rights, at times opposing the cause of transgender activists, a sensitive issue in the UK.

In 2020, she was accused of transphobia for mocking the expression “people who menstruate”. Her comments on Twitter provoked a series of reactions and some users recalled that transgender men could menstruate and trans women could not.

Since then, the writer has been the target of regular attacks and in November she reported having received death threats. The announcement comes as the Scottish Parliament considers a controversial bill aimed at facilitating the transition for transgender people.

JK Rowling expressed her repudiation of the text, defended by the Scottish independence government.
