Despite all the tension and controversy involving the British royal family and the couple Harry and Meghan, royals point out that it is unlikely that King Charles 3rd will withdraw the titles of Duke and Duchess of Sussex from the two.
“Taking away their title is not something the king would likely consider, mainly because it would be too petty and punitive,” a palace source tells international website Page Six. “It would only lead to the Sussexes claiming that it was retaliatory action and that they were never wanted in the royal family.”
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were given their titles by Queen Elizabeth II (1926-2022) in May 2018 on their wedding day. Critics of the couple point out that they should lose the name, and with the release of the documentary “Harry and Meghan” (Netflix) the comments grew.
Even if the Sussexes were impeached, Markle would still end up with a different honorific, per royal protocol, and would be considered Princess Henry, as only princesses born into the royal family can use their given names.
“Given that the Sussexes simply called the show ‘Harry and Meghan’ they should stop using their titles,” added one expert. “They are sending mixed messages otherwise. Do they want to be normal, albeit extremely powerful people – or do they want to live in the shadows of their former real lives?”
Despite this, Prince Harry could relinquish the title if he wanted to. This was previously done by Princess Patricia of Connaught, granddaughter of Queen Victoria, who married a commoner in the mid-20th century. According to the expert, the couple are believed to want their children Archie, 3, and Lilibet, 1 , have the use of royal titles.
