In the series “Glow“, the traveler-photographer Xavier Portela he captures with his lens the energy of cities at night. After Tokyo and Kobe, he returns to Japan and visits Kyoto. In Portela’s photos, the city streets, with paper lanterns and neon signs, shine. The photographer has visited the city twice; he was so fascinated that a supposed visit of a few days turned into a two-week stay there.

His love for Kyoto is so evident in how he takes care to capture with his lens the men and women who call it home. “It takes you a while to appreciate the true value of Kyoto, mostly because the best parts are hidden,” he writes. “When you arrive at the ultra-modern train station you’re only seeing the tip of the iceberg: you have to move around and out of the city center to really discover the best parts. I don’t think I’ll ever have enough time for Kyoto.”

Although it took him several years, Portela finally completed the ‘Kyoto Glow’. He can’t wait to return to Kyoto… “It’s one of those places where you feel at home even if you’re far away from it,” he confesses.
