A 33-year-old woman, identified as Rebecca Ikumelo, died on Saturday (17) after being injured in a stampede during a concert by Nigerian afrobeat singer Asake, in London, on Thursday night (15). The incident took place at the entrance to the concert hall and left eight people injured.
“Unfortunately, one of the seriously injured women died in hospital this Saturday morning,” police said in a statement. “Specialized agents continue to provide support to his family,” added the armed force.
“I am devastated by the news,” Asake said in a post posted on Instagram, adding that he has spoken to people close to her and will stay in touch. “I’m overcome with grief and I never imagined something like this could happen.”
Police reported this Saturday that two other women, aged 21 and 23, remain hospitalized in serious condition. The causes of the incident, which took place at the O2 Academy in Brixton, south London, are still being investigated.
On Friday (16), the police explained that the agents were called because “a large number of people tried to force entry”. According to the Daily Mirror newspaper, the show was canceled halfway through, to boos from the spectators, and the organizers announced that “3,000 people forced the doors from the outside”.
Prior to his London shows, Asake had posted messages on Twitter asking people without tickets not to come to the O2 Academy.
