The death toll has risen to two in a stampede during a concert by Nigerian afrobeat singer Asake held last Thursday in London. A security guard, identified as Gaby Hutchinson, 23, was seriously injured and did not resist.
Hutchinson “was working with event security that night,” police said. Eight people were hospitalized as a result of the riot, which occurred during the singer’s concert at the O2 Academy, in the Brixton neighborhood of south London.
The first victim, identified as Rebecca Ikumelo, 33, died on Saturday, and another woman, 21, is in critical condition, police said.
Singer Asake said he was “devastated” when the first victim was announced over the weekend. “I’m overcome with grief and I never imagined something like this could happen,” he said.
The investigation continues “to find out more precisely what happened on Thursday night”, but “we were able to verify that the three seriously injured women (…) were all in the lobby of the building”, police said on Monday. .
On Friday, the police explained that the agents were called because “a large number of people tried to force their way in”. Prior to his London shows, Asake had posted messages on Twitter asking people without tickets not to come to the O2 Academy.
According to the newspaper “Daily Mirror”, the show was canceled halfway through, amid boos, when the organizers announced that “3,000 people forced the doors from the outside”.
