Eight sculptures and thirteen paintings by Giorgos Zongolopoulos will remain until March 31, 2023 in the welcoming space of the Megaros Musikis.

The exhibition of sculpture and painting entitled “The works sound like music” by Giorgos Zongolopoulos, the artist who was loved by Thessaloniki, especially with the sculpture “Cor-ten”, which is located at the north gate of the D.E. .Th. opposite the Fountain and the “Umbrellas” of Nea Paralia.

Eight sculptures and thirteen paintings by Giorgos Zongolopoulos will remain until March 31, 2023 in the welcoming space of the Megaros Musikis.

“After many years, areas of the Music Hall are being used alternatively for other forms of art such as painting and sculpture”, emphasized the President of the OMTH. Vassilis Gakis, noting that “by definition Art is multidimensional.

It is not limited to the limits of music, it does not only express theater, but it expands to sculpture, painting and acquires a global and complex form of artistic creation, concern and expression”. Mr. Gakis also expressed his ambition for the Thessaloniki Concert Hall to make use of the square and the spaces it owns, in an open public sculpture gallery.

“Given that this is Art that broadens the aesthetic and cultural horizons, since as the artist himself has said, “the motivations that the work gives you sound like music”, there is no more suitable place than our Organization to host these works” emphasized the Artistic Director of the Thessaloniki Music Hall, Christos Galilaias.

The President of the Foundation of the same name, Nikos Theodoridis, described Giorgos Zongolopoulos as a “conqueror of art”, explaining that he was constantly looking for new things, methods and materials that he eventually conquered. “He dared to do large-scale works which he worked on in small dimensions but with detailed plans, always keeping in mind the vision of the great work. He saw them as an architecture that integrated into the landscape”, he said characteristically and revealed that Giorgos Zongolopoulos had said that “water is the blood of my works” and made them move with water.

“The most important discovery for the viewer is the revelation of the artist’s thorough and consistent research, mentally and formally, and the poetic, almost musical way he saw the world,” said the curator of the exhibition, Dr. Art History – Museologist Katerina Koskina. He also emphasized that “the works of Giorgos Zongolopoulos, non-figurative for the most part, are distillations of mental and poetic processes that refer to universal issues and figures”. He also mentioned that the great artist was able to cross a century that changed the history of the planet and that he was an important intellectual with a great awareness of what man is and what his relationship with the world is.
