Pablo Picasso’s daughter, Maya, has died at the age of 87

“Maya Ruith-Picasso passed away peacefully this morning, surrounded by her family,” said a statement released by her lawyer.

“Maya Ruith-Picasso passed away peacefully this morning, surrounded by her family,” the statement released by lawyer Richard Malka said, without elaborating.

Maria de la Conception, or Maya, as she was affectionately known, was born on September 5, 1935, and was the first daughter of Picasso and his muse, Marie-Thérèse Walter, with whom he had been in a relationship since 1927. The birth of this daughter brought ups and downs in the life of the artist, who had a total of four children.

Currently at the National Picasso Museum in Paris there is an exhibition on the subject of Maya’s relationship with her father. “Maya with a Doll” (1938), “Maya with a Doll and a Horse” (1938), “Maya in a Navy Suit” (1938), “Maya in an Apron” (1938) are just some of her portraits little daughter of Pablo Picasso.

“She’s the only person I know who doesn’t talk about Pablo Picasso but about dad (…) I think this testifies to the special relationship she had with him,” her son, Olivier, told AFP.

France and Spain will commemorate in 2023 the 50th anniversary of the death of Pablo Picasso, through several exhibitions of his works in both countries.
