Annual revenues from vinyl sales surpass those of CDs for the first time since 1987
Her fans Taylor Swift they made her album ‘Midnights’, the best-selling vinyl record of the century in Britain. Thus, annual revenue from vinyl sales exceeds that of CDs for the first time since 1987, according to figures cited by the Guardian newspaper.
While CD sales have been in decline for years—they peaked at 2.45 billion worldwide in 2000 as digital music revolutionized—classic LPs have unexpectedly experienced an impressive “resurgence.”
This year, UK vinyl sales are expected to rise for the 15th year in a row to around 5.5 million, the most since 1990. With 80,000 copies of ‘Midnights’ sold, Swift’s album is her biggest annual seller, for vinyl, this century.

The vinyl renaissance was largely driven by music fans looking for collector’s editions of albums – such as the Beatles, David Bowie and Pink Floyd – but it has now been passed down to younger generations.
What’s unusual is that 8 of this year’s top 10 sellers – which will be officially announced come 2023 – are new albums, released in 2022.
In 2021 revenue from vinyl sales rose 23% to £135.6m, while CD sales continued to decline, falling 3.9% to £150m.
This year, revenue from CD sales – which overtook vinyl in 1988 and cassettes in 1991 – will be up to £20m less than that of LPs, according to figures from the British paper.
