The total budget of the project amounts to 6,800,360 euros.

The cable car installation project at Monemvasia Castle, which was announced by the Minister of Culture and Sports, Lina Mendoni, in July 2021, in order to make the monument accessible to everyone, was included in the Recovery and Resilience Fund with a total budget of 6,800,360 euros.

As the Minister of Culture and Sports Lina Mendoni stated, “universal accessibility to monuments and archaeological sites, especially where high traffic is recorded, is a priority for the Ministry of Culture and Sports. Monemvasia, beyond its unique historical and archaeological importance, is an important destination.

The cable car is going to facilitate, not only the access to the Upper Town and the Temple of Hagia Sophia – in the restoration of which the YPPOA has invested significant resources – but also to allow the disabled and, in general, people with disabilities to approach the particularly important monuments of the castle state.

The project of lighting the rock, promoted in collaboration with the Region of Peloponnese, and now the cable car, give new impetus to tourism, and indeed to its special forms, but also to the experiential cultural experience of all of us”.

The project concerns the supply, installation and operation of a cable car to ensure access to the Upper Town of Monemvasia, as well as its faster approach, in case of emergencies (transportation of a patient, injured or fire, etc.).

At the same time, the formation of a network of tour routes in the Upper Town, the connection of the arrival area with visitable monuments and the restoration of the superstructure of the wall of the Upper Town are foreseen. The project is carried out with a Program Contract between the Ministry of Culture and Sports, the Municipality of Monemvasia and the Development “PARNONAS SA”.

The accompanying works on the monuments are carried out by the Directorate for the Restoration of Byzantine and Post-Byzantine Monuments and the Ephorate of Antiquities of Laconia.
