The British Museum announced today that it is holding “constructive discussions” with Greece about the Parthenon sculptures.

Britain’s Daily Telegraph reported today that an agreement has been reached with the chairman of the British Museum, former Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne, to allow the return of the Sculptures as part of an exchange deal.

The newspaper reported that such an arrangement, which will actually be a loan agreement, may be concluded soon.

“We have stated publicly we are actively pursuing a new partnership for the Parthenon with our friends in Greece and as we enter a new year, constructive discussions continue,” the British Museum said in a statement.

Bloomberg reported yesterday that the British Museum and the Acropolis Museum are close to an agreement that would pave the way for the gradual return of the Parthenon Sculptures to Greece as part of a cultural exchange.

Sources from the Greek Ministry of Culture and Sports denied the Bloomberg report.
