Cairo has decided to lend Paris the sarcophagus of Pharaoh Ramses II to be exhibited for five months in the French capital, as part of an event dedicated to the most powerful of all the rulers of ancient Egypt.

The Ramses the Great and the Gold of the Pharaohs exhibition started in San Francisco last year and will travel to Sydney, Australia in the fall, but only Parisians will have the chance to admire the sarcophagus up close.

It will undoubtedly be the most important attraction of the exhibition, which will be hosted in the Parc de la Villette from April 7th to September 5th.

The cedar-covered sarcophagus depicts the pharaoh Ramses II with his arms crossed on his chest, holding a scepter and a phrangium. At the level of the abdomen is inscribed “Ramses, the beloved of Ammon”.

He had not traveled outside of Egypt for nearly half a century. It was presented in Paris in 1976, as part of an exhibition dedicated to Ramses II, one of the most famous pharaohs of the 19th Dynasty who ruled for 67 years.
