28-year-old Miss USA R’ Bonney Gabriel — a fashion designer, model and sewing instructor from Texas — was crowned Miss Universe Saturday night at the glamorous 71st Miss Universe pageant held in New Orleans (and a parallel universe).
Miss Venezuela, Amanda Dudamel and Miss Dominican Republic, Andreina Martinez, were named first and second alternate Miss.

In the final stage of the competition for the three finalists, Gabriel was asked how she would work to prove that Miss Universe is “a dynamic and progressive” woman if she won.

“I would use it to be a transformative pioneer,” Gabriel replied, citing her work using recycled materials in her fashion design and teaching sewing to victims of trafficking and domestic violence.
“It’s so important to invest in others, invest in our community and use your unique talent to make a difference,” Gabriel continued.
