The 1920s pendant was worn several times by the late princess
Kim Kardashian spent over $197,453 for a piece of jewelry once worn by Princess Diana. The ‘Attallah’ cross was sold to a representative of the famous TV personality after it was auctioned by Sotheby’s in London.
The 1920s pendant was worn several times by the late princess, most famously at a charity gala in London in October 1987.
The princess teamed the locket with a Catherine Walker dress as she attended the gala in support of Birthright, a charity that protects human rights during pregnancy and childbirth.
Kim Kardashian bought the locket for $197,453 – more than double its pre-auction estimate – after a bidding ‘war’ involving four prospective buyers during the auction.
The cross has a total diamond weight of approximately 5.25 carats. It was first bought by businessman Naim Attallah in the 1980s and because of his friendship with Diana, he had lent it to her several times. Created by luxury jewelry designer Garrard in 1920.
Ahead of the sale, the house’s head of jewelery in London, Christian Spofforth, said: “Jewelry owned or worn by the late Princess Diana very rarely comes on the market, especially a piece like the Attallah cross, which it’s so colourful, bold and distinctive.”
“To some extent, this unusual locket symbolizes the princess’s growing confidence in her jewelry and accessory choices at this particular time in her life,” he added.
The cross pendant is a bold and colorful fleurée (flower shape) style set with square-cut amethysts accented by circle diamonds.
