In a letter to the Ministry of Health, the Athens-Piraeus Hospital Physicians Association claims that the available empty beds are now minimal due to the large influx of patients in the last month.
The number of patients has hit “red”. due to polydemia and other morbidity, at Emergency Department of the “Sismanoglio” hospital, where the situation that has been prevailing for a month “has reached the impenetrable with patients ending up in the TEP, as there are no hospital beds available, reports the Medical Association of Athens-Piraeus Hospitals (EINAP).
In her letter to the leadership of the Ministry of Health and the administration of the hospital, she emphasizes that in the last three general vigils (January 9, 13 and 17), after they ended “they remained at the TEP – because there was no bed available in the hospital- about 30 patients, while after the general on-call on January 17, 43 patients remained in the ICU, mainly with pulmonary and pathological cases, until a nursing bed was found in any department, several hours or even days later”.
Given that the hospital also has a morning shift two days after the general shift, the available empty beds before on-call are now minimal, EINAP notes. “When the shift started on January 13, there were 7 empty beds for pathological cases, 1 for surgical and 2 for pulmonary cases. It is now a given that the hospital on-call has suffered a heart attack”, reports EINAP.
Alongside, speaks of “tragic understaffing of the two pathological departments, which from the beginning of 2023, due to retirements, are left with three specialists each, as well as the two surgical departments where three specialists serve in one and four in the other (one with an extension of retirement)”. EINAP requests the fastest possible transfer of patients from the TEP to the departments, after the end of the morning and general on-call, restructuring of the pulmonology on-call of the basin, immediate announcement of 6 positions of pathologists, 5 surgeons and 2 thoracic surgeons, in order to cover the immediate and urgent needs of these departments.
