The excavation revealed a public building, which was excavated on an area of 145 sq.m., with important finds, among others a large scattering of votive figurines, probably connected to a neighboring cult space
The settlement area of the classical times city of ancient Tenea it was identified during the systematic archaeological survey 2022 in Chiliomodi, Corinth, within the framework of the research program of Ancient Tenea. The research is being carried out under the direction of archaeologist Dr. Elena Korkas, with the implementing body being the Directorate of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities of the Ministry of Culture and Sports.
As he mentions relevant announcement of the Ministry of Health, the excavation brought to light a public building, which was excavated on an area of 145 sq.m., with important finds, among others, a large scattering of votive figurines, probably connected to a neighboring cult space. At the same time, a strong rampart wall of the early classical period was excavated at the border of the city.
According to the same announcement, the size and dynamics of the Roman city continues to impress even with this year’s excavation results. In the sector of the Roman shops of the city, about 2,100 coins and weights were discovered in a room of the building, which is identified with the seat of a local official. In addition, a second above-ground burial monument has come to light that demonstrates, in combination with the first one discovered in 2016, the economic strength and prosperity of the Roman Teneas. Finally, an oversized cistern of about 130 m2 was excavated, probably the central water supply of the Roman city, which shows the dynamics of its population in this particular period.
The research program of ancient Tenea during this year’s excavation period was active, in addition to the archaeological research, by co-organizing the BioMuse periodical exhibition “From the fragments of bones” in the stories of people”, which was hosted at the Kalogeropouleio Foundation of Corinth from September 17 to October 17. The exhibition was implemented as a continuation of the BioMuse research project, a partnership of Greek and German agencies and presents with modern physical and digital means the biographies of ten people who lived in Greece in the last 11,000 years – among them a Teneat from archaic times. The research program, under the direction of Dr. E. Korkas, is supported by an interdisciplinary team, archaeologists headed by P. Evangeloglou, archaeologist of the EFA of Corinth, numismatists headed by K. Lagos, anthropologists headed by the deputy professor of the IFT, Chr. Papageorgopoulou, surveyor with the professor of agronomists and surveyor engineers of NTUA A. Georgopoulos in charge.
