“Rust” is set to resume filming, with Hutchins’ widower producing

Actor Michael Shannon in an interview he took the stand on the involuntary manslaughter charge actor and producer Alec Baldwin is facing after the shooting death of filmmaker Halina Hutchins.

Speaking to the Chicago Tribune, Shannon said: “I’m not condemning Alec. I feel horrible for him. It’s a nightmare. I feel terrible for everyone in this production. But that’s what happens when you make cuts and hire people who might not be suitable, and pay them next to nothing, to make a movie cheaper. People get jobs in businesses because they are willing to work for low enough pay. I see it all the time.”

As the actor said in film rehearsals, actors rarely use real weapons and usually have some kind of plastic.

“You shouldn’t have a real gun in your hands until just before you make the final shot,” he said. “Now, sometimes that doesn’t happen. Sometimes they give the actual gun for the rehearsal that takes place just before the shoot. But there is a process for that. They open the cylinder. They show you that there is nothing in there. They show the reel to the assistant director and he does a visual confirmation. The actor is supposed to control it, the gunsmith controls it too. All three of these people must see that there is nothing in there. And then they give it to you.”

He added: “In ‘Rust’, before he got [ο Μπάλντουιν] the gun in his hands he should have seen with his own eyes that there was nothing in it. The gunsmith should have brought him the gun and said, “Here’s your gun. It’s empty.” Or maybe [το όπλο] it has dummies in it, you pull the trigger, nothing happens. But you never get to hand an actor the gun without showing them what’s inside. Always”.
