Bollywood star Salman Khan, 56, very famous in India, reported on Monday (27) that he was bitten twice by a snake he was trying to drive out of his country house near Mumbai, India.

Armed with a stick, “I carefully picked up the snake and took it out. Then it got tangled up [na vara], started to climb and stung me. Villagers started shouting ‘hospital, hospital, hospital’. There was a lot of confusion. The snake was a little poisonous and it stung me again,” said the Indian actor.

At the hospital, he received antivenom and was under observation. He was discharged six hours later. According to him, the animal was left in the wild.

India recorded around 58,000 snakebite-related deaths a year — or 160 a day — between 2000 and 2019, according to a study published last year.

Though controversial, Khan is one of Bollywood’s biggest celebrities. In 2018, Khan was sentenced to five years in prison for killing rare antelope during a hunt in 1998. For his release, Mahesh Bora, the actor’s lawyer, said the judge asked for bail of US$770 (about R$ 4,300).

Salman Khan has been imprisoned for different cases in India. In 2015, he was acquitted of the death of a homeless person who was hit by his car in 2002 in Mumbai. In recent years, he has been accused of illegal hunting of gazelles, being convicted in the first instance and acquitted in the appeal process.
