“It looks like something out of a movie.” This is how singer Paulo Eduardo Santos, 40, known as Paulinho Oliveira, classifies the confusion that led his wife to be called by hospital workers in São Vicente (70 km from São Paulo) to recognize her body, supposedly a victim of tuberculosis.
According to the city hall, the real dead person is a homeless person who, without documents, identified himself as Paulo Eduardo dos Santos, before his clinical condition worsened and he died. The confusion would have been caused after employees search the system for relatives of the deceased just taking into account the name mentioned.
The musician told the report that it was around lunchtime last Monday (27) when his wife received a call.
“When she answered, they said she was from the social service at the municipal hospital in São Vicente, that they needed to talk to her urgently about Paulo Eduardo.” The man reports that his wife thought it was strange, since they were together at that time, after having lunch at a mall in the city.
Since the person on the other end of the line said he could only provide details in person, they decided to head to the hospital right away.
Paulinho details that only his wife came to the emergency room, while he was outside. But, according to the woman narrated to him, the social worker informed that Paulo Eduardo dos Santos died of tuberculosis on Sunday night (26), hours after he was admitted to the place, after being rescued by Samu (Medical Care Service of Emergency).
Surprised, Paulinho’s wife, producer Jacira Oliveira, 40, explained that her husband was alive and that he had taken her there. The argument made the employee present papers in which the singer’s data were inserted, such as the name of the parents, address and CPF number.
With the confusion, Paulinho said that he went to talk to the social worker in person. “I took my wallet and showed her my driver’s license. She saw that all my data was on that citizen.”
The first part of the confusion cleared, the man stated that he had been asked to recognize the body, but refused to enter the room where the dead are kept. With that, he proceeded with the recognition through a photo.
“When we found out, I even made some funnier videos, but then we saw that it wasn’t funny at all, because it was a serious mistake,” he told the leaf about the videos he posted on a social network where he jokes about being alive, but declared dead by the hospital.
Even a death certificate, pointing out acute respiratory failure, resulting from pulmonary tuberculosis, was even drawn up with the name of Paulo Eduardo Santos. However, the document was canceled, according to the city.
Recovered from the scare, Paulinho Oliveira pointed out that the situation could have had an even more serious result, as employees of a health post were at his house to share the news of his death, but they did not find family members, including his mother, an elderly woman who turns 61 years old this Wednesday (29).
“My mom was on sick leave all last week, but it was on Monday, she went back to work, so she wasn’t home. If it was last week my mom would have received this terrible news and would have been sick, fatally, then I wouldn’t know the end of this story.”

The Municipality of São Vicente, through the Health Department (Sesau), informs that on Sunday morning (26) the Samu was called to assist a homeless person.
Help was given at 9:24 am. Aware, he complained of shortness of breath and, without any personal documents, identified himself to the team as Paulo Eduardo dos Santos. At the Municipal Hospital, the patient had a worsening in the condition, and died at night, from respiratory failure caused by tuberculosis, as confirmed in the tests performed.
As usual, it was verified in the computerized system that a person with the same name and age had already been seen at the hospital. With more accurate data available, the unit contacted a family member by telephone indicated in the form, requesting him to come to the hospital, where it was confirmed that he was a homonym.
It is noteworthy that the procedures adopted aimed at all times to identify the patient who died. Finally, an unnamed death certificate was generated. The body was sent to the IML for document identification and search for possible family members.
