“Our skin is nothing more than that: It’s just skin,” the actor said
Idris Elba had a lot to say about him racism in Hollywood and on how he defines the “Black actor” label.
“I stopped describing myself as a black actor when I realized it was putting me in a box,” the actor told Esquire. “If we spent half the year not talking about the differences but the similarities between us, the whole planet would have a change in the way they treat each other.”
He then described how such labels can cripple one’s aspirations: “As humans, we are obsessed with race. And that obsession can really hinder people’s aspirations, hinder people’s growth.”
He continued, “Racism should be a topic of discussion, for sure. Racism is very real. But from my perspective, it’s only as powerful as you allow it to be. We have to grow up… Our skin is nothing more than that: It’s just skin.”
When asked why he pursued a career in entertainment, Elba said he chose to become an actor not because of a lack of representation of his race, but because “I thought it was a great profession and I could do a good job.”
“As you come up, they ask you what it’s like to be the first black person to do this or that,” Elba added. “Well, it’s the same as it would be if I were white. It’s the first time for me. I don’t want to be the first black man. I am the first Idris.”
