The actor opened up about the fear he felt about starting an openly gay entertainment career
Since he started his career, more than 15 years ago, Mr Dan Levy says that LGBTQ+ acceptance has come a long way.
Speaking on the podcast “Phone a Friend with Jessi Cruickshank” the actor recalled how he “didn’t feel very free” as openly gay while hosting MTV Canada’s “MTV Live” in 2006.
“It was kind of like they were telling us, ‘Comply with the workplace culture or sit out.’ But it was never like, ‘Let’s stop what we’re doing to listen to you,'” he explained.
“I remember coming into work one day and someone asked me what I did on the weekend? I said, “Well, I installed a dimmer switch in my apartment.” And that person said, ‘Wow, it’s almost like you’re a real man.'”
Although she thought “this is not right… at that time, there was no sensitivity and there was no one to go to and tell because it was a different time,” she said, and spoke about the fear she felt in starting a career in entertainment as openly gay.
“Will it change my career? Will opportunities be limited? Will that limit my life as an actor?’ he wondered at the time, noting that there weren’t “a large number of actors who were thriving and drowning in work”.
