Aircraft engine catches fire mid-air from Edinburgh to New York – Watch video

Photos of the plane’s wing engulfed in flames have made the rounds on the internet.

Disturbance prevailed among passengers on a flight to Edinburgh when flames began to appear from one wing of the plane which then made an emergency landing minutes after take off.

As the BBC reports, Delta Airlines flight DAL209 bound for New York made an emergency landing at Prestwick after engine problems.

A BBC Scotlant News reporter who was on the flight said “the plane took off and there was a loud noise from the engine, similar to the sound heard on take-off and landing, but it seemed to continue when we were in the air”.

“Soon we realized we were about to land. When the plane landed we saw fire engines running towards us. We were told to leave all our belongings and leave as fast as we could. There was no real panic among the passengers, more confusion.”

As he explained he didn’t know how serious the incident was until they entered the terminal and heard people talking about what had happened.

He added that the flight crew on the plane were “amazing”.

In a statement the airline said: “Delta Flight 209 from Edinburgh to New York diverted safely to Glasgow Prestwick Airport following a mechanical problem with one of the aircraft’s two engines. We apologize to our customers for this inconvenience.”
