Madonna pays tribute to her brother after death: ‘Thank you for surprising me when I was young’

by

Madonna paid tribute to her older brother, Anthony Ciccone. A day after the official announcement of the death of a relative made by her brother-in-law, musician Joe Henry, the singer posted a photo of the two of them together. In the click, she appears surrounded by several friends and one of them was Anthony.

“Thank you for surprising me as a young man and introducing me to Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Buddhism, Taoism, Charles Bukowski, Richard Brautigan, Jack Kerouac, out-of-the-box thinking… You planted many important seeds,” wrote Madonna, who had not a very good relationship with his brother in recent times.

For many years, Anthony struggled with alcoholism and accused his family of not caring about the disease and even abandoning him. He came to live on the streets of Tranverse, in the state of Michigan, in the United States, for seven years. But, he returned to the family home after undergoing rehabilitation.

In 2011, The Sun newspaper tried to interview him where he lived: under a bridge in that city. In vain. “I’m not looking for publicity. If you’re here to get stories about my sister, that’s not me,” Anthony said at the time. He also reportedly revealed that he never had a good relationship with Madonna.

Despite her brother’s statements, the singer has said in several interviews that she has always helped him, not only by paying for rehabilitation clinics but also in attempts to get closer to Anthony, who would have died on Friday (24), aged 66. The cause of death was not revealed.
