Daniel Bruhl will play the late fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld in Gaumont’s Disney+ series Kaiser Karl. Filming takes place in France, Monaco and Italy.

The six-episode series will chronicle Karl Lagerfeld’s rise in the world of haute couture in the 1970s, and will also explore his rivalry with Yves Saint Laurent partner Pierre Bergé, as well as his love affair with Jacques De Basser.

In 1972, 38-year-old Karl Lagerfeld aspired to become the most famous fashion designer in France at a time when Yves Saint Laurent was dominant.

Lagerfeld became head designer and creative director of Chanel, Fendi and his own brand.

French director Jerome Sall, creator of the films “Kompromat,” “Totems,” “The Odyssey” and “Zulu,” will be, according to Variety, the “artistic mind” behind the series and is set to direct the episodes. 1, 2 and 6, while up-and-coming director Audrey Estrugo will direct the other three.

The creators of the “Kaiser Karl” series are Aisar Pisani-Ferry, Jennifer Have and Raphael Baquet, author of Karl Lagerfeld’s biography.

Daniel Bruhl, one of Germany’s most important, internationally recognized stars, will star in the series alongside Theodore Pellerin, Arnaud Valois and Alex Lutz.

The “Kaiser Karl” series will feature more than 2,200 supporting actors, use 40 different sets and approximately 3,000 costumes, 160 of which will be created from scratch, according to Disney+.
