The destruction of the Greek religious and cultural heritage also causes sadness from the deadly earthquakes in Turkey.

In Altinozou district, Hatay province, a historic Greek Orthodox church was destroyed by the earthquakes, Anadolu Agency reported on Saturday.

The church is counted that he was 700 years old, and now only its bell tower survives. The roof of the temple collapsed as did most of the walls.

Speaking to Anadolu, Ibrahim Cilingir, vice president of the church’s foundation, said the building was restored only in 2020 and prayers were held there ever since. “We restored the church three years ago. We really put a lot of effort into it,” he added.

“It was a very beautiful church that was really worth seeing and has been standing since its foundation. Unfortunately, it was destroyed after the earthquake,” he added, calling on the Turkish authorities to help restore the church.

Chilingir stressed that “the destruction of the church really upset people. I hope we will rebuild this church together with the state.”
