The handover ceremony was held on Tuesday by the Manhattan prosecutor’s office 29 Greek antiquities of great value, in the presence of the Minister of Culture Linas Mendonis. The event took place at the Consulate General of Greece in New York.

The Greek-born Assistant District Attorney of Manhattan Matthew Bogdanoswho heads the body responsible for dealing with antiquities theft, spoke about 29 outstanding cultural treasures. “As a proud Greek-American it is even more important to return antiquities to Greece” emphasized, among others, Mr. Bogdanos.

It is noted that a year ago, the Manhattan Prosecutor’s Office handed over to the Greek government 55 archaeological findings of high value, 47 of which come from the infamous collection of billionaire Michael Steinhardt. A total of 180 items in Steinhart’s possession were found to have been smuggled and exported from their countries of origin.
