The American director, screenwriter and producer has finally announced that the film, almost four decades later, is complete
Francis Ford Coppola has wrapped production on his controversial film Megalopolis, a film that began as an idea over 40 years ago.
Coppola’s passion project was first announced in 1980, however, the director didn’t have the money at the time to make the film a reality, ultimately shelving his plans.
The American director, screenwriter and producer has finally announced that the film, almost four decades later, is complete.
The announcement was made on the film’s Instagram account last week, with the caption: (Done) “That’s a wrap #MegalopolisFilm.”
According to reports, film studios were initially unwilling to support Coppola’s project, leading him to finance it himself. The director sold many of his assets, including his Northern California wineries, to finance the $100 million film.
During the production of “Megalopolis” there were rumors that the atmosphere on the set was “chaotic” after the creative department quit. However, Adam Driver, who stars in the film, dismissed the claims – telling Indiewire that “the environment that Francis creates is one of concentration and inspiration.”
Coppola, who wrote and directed the film, selected an all-star cast including Forest Whitaker, Natalie Emanuel, Aubrey Plaza, Laurence Fishburne and Talia Shire.
The film, which will hit theaters in 2024, follows a successful architect who decides to rebuild New York into a utopian society after a natural disaster destroys the city’s infrastructure.
