The exhibition, through 600 works from the 15th century to the present day, raises questions about facial and body hair
Opening today, March 5, 2023, of the exhibition “Des cheveux et des poils” in the Musée des Arts Décoratifs of Paris. The project, conceived by Denis Bruna, chief curator in the museum’s department of fashion and textiles, explores how haircuts and hairstyles have contributed to the construction of appearance in the Western world for centuries.
“Hair is a key component of our identity and has often been used to express our attachment to a fashion, our devotion to a belief or a protest while at the same time bringing to mind deeper meanings such as femininity, masculinity or carelessness, to name a few. only a few” note from the museum.
In the exhibition, through 600 works from the 15th century to the present day, questions are raised about facial and body hair. The relative skills of yesterday and today are presented through iconic figures such as Léonard Autier, Marie Antoinette’s favorite hairdresser, Monsieur Antoine, the Carita sisters, Alexandre de Paris and contemporaries.
In addition, big names in contemporary fashion such as Alexander McQueen, Martin Margiela and Josephus Thimister are present, with spectacular designer creations created with that special material: hair. The exhibit is hosted in the museum’s Christine & Stephen A. Schwarzman Fashion Rooms and ends on September 17. Set design was edited by David Lebreton of Designers Unit.
