Luigi Lineri, Italian artist has been working in recent years to compose a monumental collection of stones. La Ricerca (The Search) is a unique installation made of thousands of stones, pebbles that look like primitive flint tools and symbolic sculptures depicting pivotal moments in the evolution of humanity.

His cathedral-sized facility is a work in progress, making new additions and renovations every day. Exploring the Andige River and the Lessinia Mountains, Luigi Lineri has collected and recorded countless pebbles in the shapes of people and animals, reminiscent of mysterious prehistoric sculptures.

Collective existential research, time travel, symbols, art, ecology and technological progress is the theme of Giuseppe Petruccellis’ La Ricerca documentary which will have its world premiere on April 24 at the Visions du Reel Festival in Switzerland.

“I met Luigi Lineri and his artwork in early 2015. The meeting sparked an unprecedented wonder and a long line of questions. A spark that started the development of this film” says in his note Giuseppe Petroutcellis, who wrote the script, directed, edited and produced the documentary.

Luigi’s masterpiece is a formidable tool for exploring universal themes. He has covered a huge field of anthropological, philosophical and even political issues. Many of these issues are extremely topical and urgent, such as our conflicting relationship with the ecosystem, he emphasizes.

Luigi Lineri was born in 1937 in Albaro di Ronco al Andige, the third of 12 siblings. His father was a chanter. In his twenties he begins to devote himself to poetry, painting and sculpture. He has been awarded several national poetry awards. His vases, paintings and ceramics are successful and some of his artworks are exhibited at the Musée Collection de l’Art Brut in Lausanne.

In 1964 he begins to collect stones. In 1966 he married Tosca Guglielmi and in the 1970s their daughters Genjiana and Stella were born. After working in a family shoe store and then as a health care assistant at the hospital in Verona, from 1985 he dedicated himself exclusively to La Ricerca.

Impronta Films has taken over the worldwide sales of La Ricerca according to Variety. Chilean-American composer Nicholas Jaar has written the film’s soundtrack.
