Guy Ritchie is reportedly facing a lawsuit over his film “The Gentlemen”with the screenwriter Mickey De Hara to claim that the British director copied scenes from a script he had submitted to him.

The 2020 gangster film follows a drug dealer, played by Matthew McConaughey, who tries to sell his empire.

In a lawsuit filed in London’s High Court last month, according to Variety, De Hara claims Richie commissioned him to write a sequel to the 2008 film RockNRolla based on his “personal life experiences” as he once was convicted of possession of cocaine and cannabis “with intent to supply” for which he faced a prison sentence.

Di Hara reportedly claims that in 2018, after he sent Ritchie his script about a protagonist who runs a marijuana business, Ritchie told him the project wouldn’t happen.

The film The Gentlemen was released two years later and De Hara claims it is a “substantial” reproduction of his script. According to the lawsuit, the film copied De Hara’s characters and “unique plot aspects” of his script.

The screenwriter claims that after the film was released, he texted Richie saying how similar the two projects were, and the director replied: “Mickey, me and my folks have been trying to get in touch with you for a few years now. There was no response. I am happy that we will sit down and discuss.”

De Hara denies that Ritchie attempted to contact him about the issue before the film’s release.

Guy Ritchie reportedly refused the screenwriter’s request to include his name in the film’s credits, but suggested that he be credited as a screenwriter on another project, in which he was not involved. De Hara is claiming the sum of $250,000 “for his original work used in the film “The Gentlemen” without his consent and without payment of the agreed fee.”
