On January 12, the season of the digital series of the House “Society Uncensored” opens with the discussion “8 Athenians discuss: What does it mean to be an active citizen today?” on the YouTube Channel of the Onassis Foundation.
How do people build the city, collectively and creatively? How do different citizenship struggles look like and relate to each other? The new online discussion of the Onassis Foundation Roof removes the borders of the state, capturing the realities of everyday urban life and highlighting street practices for shaping the city.
Co-chaired by the Forum of Syrian and Greek Youth, an international activist movement based in Athens, the Onassis Foundation brings together various civic organizations involved in active citizenship practices. Different knowledge is gathered from multiple perspectives: community art, refugee activism, processing, Black Studies, asylum legislation, environmental sustainability, education and much more. Discussion approaches the needs, ideas and methods of statehood, the challenges that arise and the ways of overcoming them collectively, moving from daily actions to creative ways of being in the world.
Participants: Michael Afolayan (ANASA Cultural Center for African Art and Culture), Ayman Alkalaa (Syrian-Greek Youth Forum – SGYF), Keira Dignan (ECHO Mobile Library), Elena Karagianni (Visual Arts Coordinator, YSU of the association: Art and Action Network), Vangelis Manolopoulos (Land Organization), Chryssa Mela (Khora Asylum Support Team- KAST), Niovi Zarabuka-Hatzimanou (Victoria Square Project-VSP). Moderator: Tom Western (UCL, SGYF).
With Greek and English subtitles. The video will remain available for no fee or time limit.
