Virgin novel – indirect confession of Hollywood superstar Tom Hanks “pulls back” the curtain on the film industry and his behavior on set
THE Tom Hanks reveals Hollywood, and reveals himself, if only through deception, in his maiden novel, saying he wrote it as a “relief from the never-ending pressure” of filmmaking. The two-time Oscar-winning actor, married to Greek-born Rita Wilson, publishes The Making of Another Major Motion Picture Masterpiece, which is inspired by his career on the big screen.
The maiden novel – indirect confession of the big Hollywood star “pulls” the curtain in the film industry and his behavior on set.
The drudgery of making a film, he tells the BBC, means you can “just run out of curiosity about the job”. “Sometimes you just have to have another reason to let your imagination run wild,” he explains. Hanks, 66, says he’s “always” written, “in one way or another.” His collection of short stories, Uncommon Type, was published in 2017 and has sold more than 234,000 copies in the UK alone. He began writing his new 448-page novel the following year.
“I wrote between movies, I wrote wherever I was, I wrote on planes, I wrote at home, I wrote on vacation, I wrote in hotel rooms, I wrote on weekends when I wasn’t working,” he says. “It is not fair”, admits that his debut novel is being published without passing the usual test of rejections from publishers, while other first-time authors struggle to get their book published. But he’s unapologetic, and knows the book will “ultimately live and die by its own ability to entertain and enlighten an audience.”
The critics’ verdicts for The Making of Another Major Motion Picture Masterpiece are anyway warm. Hanks isn’t bothered by the criticism. He says his “day job as a movie star” means he can “handle” any criticism. The actor says he gets “stronger when it comes to really ‘falling apart’.”
The plot of his novel is about making a superhero action movie several million dollars and features a cast of characters, including an eccentric director and an egotistical protagonist who interrupts and delays filming. So it comes as a surprise when Hanks, the likable voice of Woody in Toy Story, admits he’s not always a nice guy: “I have behaved like that myself in each of these times (of the book) on a set. “Not everyone is at their best every day on a movie set,” he continues. “I’ve had some tough days trying to be professional, with my life falling apart in more ways than one, and the requirement for me that day was to be funny, charming and tender – and let that be the last thing I feel.”
However, Hanks prides himself on always being on time. “What cannot happen in a film is that one cannot play with the time or the duration of the shoot or the budget. This is a grave sin in the film industry.”
“You’d be surprised,” he adds, “how many people (actors) know they can ‘get away with it,’ and are told they can get away with it because they’re carrying the film on their shoulders.”
