A year after the protest memos, there has been no response – They ask the state to take immediate action
Even determined to abstain from the upcoming parliamentary elections, are the residents of the local community of Lefkohori in the municipality of Pinios, who in recent years have been confronted with phenomena of delinquency, which grow year by year.
Especially in the last few days after May 1, this year, the situation reached an impasse as barrages of burglaries and thefts took place once again resulting in the anger and resentment of the residents. As revealed in the ep. As victims of theft, they are constantly the recipients of intense criminal behavior by groups of people who steal without qualms anything they find useful.
A year before May, the residents and non-residents of Lefkohori had proceeded with a written complaint – protest which they had communicated to the Ministry of Citizen Protection, the Police Directorate of Ilia, the Prosecutor’s Office of Amaliada, the deputies of the Prefecture and the mayor of Pinios Andreas Marino , asking for immediate measures to stop the delinquency phenomena in their area.
“We feel imprisoned in our own homes”, report residents of Lefkohori with indignation, who now declare that they are ready not to go to the polls on Sunday, May 21 with the positive opinion of the local community council.
Constant thefts
As members of the local council pointed out, “in recent years, Lefkohori has been hit by a series of acts of lawlessness and delinquency with residents as victims. To this end, many incidents of violence have been recorded and made public, namely: thefts, burglaries, vandalism, extensive destruction of property and even physical violence against the elderly.
“The houses of the non-residents”, they continue, “are at the mercy of criminals and we, the permanent residents of Lefkohori, in addition to the fear of the violation of our private property, also face the risk to which our physical integrity is exposed, as well as our own the life”.
The latest incidents in Lefkohori took place in houses on the evening of May Day, when their owners were at the village festival and as soon as they returned they found their houses ransacked, including that of the president of the community, Thanasis Droulia, who lives in the area of Kavasilos . In addition, there are many cases of residents who have been victims of theft more than twenty times, which means huge financial costs to repair the damage.
“We are alone”
“The police, due to a lack of manpower and equipment on the one hand, and due to the merger of departments on the other hand, are unable to cover the large volume of incidents of criminal acts in the area, resulting in the prevalence of impunity over our personal safety and protection in general”, declare the residents of Lefkohori , who for the last time ask the state to take measures.
“Our concern over this illegal and unprecedented situation has resulted in justified indignation and anger and for these reasons we demand the imperative taking of all necessary measures for our personal safety and the protection of our private property, constitutionally guaranteed rights, which they are public goods in all civilized societies”, they emphasize in their recent memorandum and note that “We are not second-class citizens, but Greek citizens who contribute to public burdens and have every right to live in safety and dignity”.
It is worth noting that the next few days will be crucial for the decision to participate or abstain in the electoral process, as meetings and discussions between the local council and the residents are expected to produce a result.
