In celebration of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, Mattel has introduced a new Barbie in honor of Anna May Wongthe first Chinese-American Hollywood star.

Barbie, Anna May Wong, is part of the ‘Inspiring Women’ series which has captured iconic figures such as Maya Angelou, Rosa Parks and Sally Ride. For the doll, Mattel worked closely with Anna Wong, the actress’ niece, who told AP News: “I didn’t hesitate at all. It was such an honor and so exciting. I wanted to make sure they got her facial features and clothing right. And they did!”

Designed by Carlyle Nuera, the new Barbie features Wong’s trademark straight naivety and pencil-thin brows, as well as stunning makeup. She wears an evening gown with a gold dragon design on it and a long cobweb shawl, gold earrings and heels; her outfit is inspired by her appearance in Alexander Hall’s 1934 film Limehouse Blues.

Born in Los Angeles in 1905, Wong had her first leading role at the age of 17 in the 1922 film “The Toll of the Sea” before moving on to talkies. Her filmography includes “The Gallery of Madame Liu-Tsong”, the first American television series with an Asian-American in the lead role. She was also the first Asian American actress to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. She was also considered one of the best-dressed women of her time, combining flapper style with traditional Chinese clothing and bold accessories. Despite her international success, Wong has struggled with stereotyping in the film industry, and this has led her to advocate for greater representation of Asian American actors in Hollywood.

Before she “earned” her very own Barbie, Anna May Wong made history a few months ago when she became the first Asian American to appear on US currency as part of the American Women Quarters program.
